Abstract

Independent Safety Audit features in many Ministry of Defence policies, but its role is often not well understood. This paper examines the various different MOD policy requirements for independent safety audit and looks at how those requirements can be fulfilled. It attempts to demystify the process of contracting for ISA work by introducing sources of guidance for project staff, including the recently developed Code of Practice and Competence Framework developed by the IET/BCS Independent Safety Assurance Working Group. The paper also briefly examines what impact the recent report of Charles Haddon-Cave QC into the loss of Nimrod XV-230 is likely to have on the role of Independent Safety Audit.
